| Governor Healey is poised to underfund the Group Insurance Commission (GIC) in her upcoming budget, triggering plan design changes that would shift significant health care costs onto public employees, retirees, and their families. If the GIC is underfunded, subscribers will pay more out of pocket through higher deductibles, higher copays, and reduced coverage. Proposals under consideration include: Raising deductibles by $250 for individual plans and $500 for family plans. Increasing copays by up to 50 percent, including for emergency room and urgent care visits. Eliminating coverage for GLP-1 medications when used for weight loss, despite their role in preventing chronic illness and reducing long-term costs. And the impact won’t stop with GIC subscribers. Even cities and towns that do not participate in GIC plans use the Commission as a benchmark; meaning every public employee could ultimately feel the effects. |
